——————————

This story is about my dad who is a father of 3. I will start this story when I was born. I was born in Durban South Africa to a father and mother that were deeply in love and that deeply loved me. 18 months after I was born, my father and I lost my mother to an illness that she had been battling since my birth. Life was not easy for a young single father who had lost the love of his life. He worked extremely hard to provide the best life he could for   me. When I was 18 he was lucky enough to find love again. He remarried and had my two half brothers and for the first time in a really long time he was doing well with his business and his new family.

In about 2014 the political situation in South Africa reached a point where he believed his family were no longer safe, so he sold everything he had and he and his new family(I stayed) moved to the UK.  When he got to the UK the setup costs depleted most of the money they had and with no formal qualifications to his name and with what little savings he had left he managed to buy an old van and began working as a self employed courier. Not too long after that his van was up for inspection and unknown to him their was hidden rust on the van and it was deemed unroadworthy. He was no longer able to work and the van was worth almost nothing. He did bounce back however and he found a job working for a different courier company using one of their own vehicles. The downside to this job is that it didn’t pay too well and he has been working 17 hours a day to make ends meet. He began saving what little money he had left every month for a new(old) van. Over the past 4 years he has managed to put a little money away every month.

About a week ago I too relocated to the UK from South Africa and was happy to again be close to my family. My dad mentioned to me that he had managed to save up enough money for a secondhand van and he would be searching for one so that he could work for himself again. A couple days ago he managed to find a van on eBay going for £3850 and he wanted to buy it. Unfortunately he was not able to see it in person as he was working but he managed to get a friend to go see it and his friend advised that the vehicle was in good condition and that he should buy it. He phoned his bank and got them to confirm the account of the seller and my dad transferred the money and it was agreed that he would pick the van up from Andover in the UK which is about a 2 hour drive from where he lives. Last night he took a few hours off work and asked if I could go with him so that I could drive the one vehicle back. When we got to the address at 8pm last night, that was visited by my dad’s friend, we knocked on the door only to be told that the man we were looking for didn't live at that address and there was no van in sight. We tried phoning the seller again who was now not answering his phone anymore. Right then we both knew that my father had just been scammed out of his money.

He was devastated! I could see the blood drain from his face and how he was struggling to hold back the tears. Years of 17 hour shifts everyday to save up again for his own van had just been taken from him. He frantically tried to get hold of the seller again who had now turned his phone off. He kept repeating to me telling me that it will take him years to save up that money again and that his life was over. It just broke my heart. Arriving home at 23:30 last night he got back into his work van and went to work and did another shift.

I ask for your support so I can try get him his savings back and he can try buy a van that he needs to live a slightly better life. Every little bit helps and would be greatly appreciated. We have spoken to the bank who can’t reverse the transaction and he has reported the incident to the police who we are told can’t do much about this sort of situation. We have also reported the seller on eBay.

If you would like to know more details about the story and how they managed to scam him or if you would like to get in touch with me then please email me on
